Karama Beirut 2021
Despite the difficulties and very harsh conditions in Beirut and Lebanon, Karama-Beirut is preparing for its fifth edition, to be held on the 23 till 26 September 2021 at the Sunflower Theater in Beirut, under the theme “occupy the void“. Twenty films will be screened during the festival varying in the genre of; fiction, documentary and short fiction from various countries of origin, including: Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Qatar, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Germany, Canada, the Czech Republic, the United States and others. The 5th edition will present an intellectual symposium that will address the means of political and social change within the existing sectarian system. In addition Karama Beirut will organize two “Master Classes”, entitled “Citizen Rights in Drama Writing” and “Paths of Expressing the Revolution in Cinema”. The Karama Beirut team hopes to invite its directors and producers guests despite the multiple crises Lebanon is passing through.
Karama Beirut will open with the screening of the Egyptian film “Hammam Sokhn” / “Trapped” with the presence of the director Manal Khaled, duration of the film is 77 minutes and it will be screened at “The Sunflower Theatre” in Beirut. The film talks about the entrapment of few women due to the events unfolding in the streets of Egypt and apartment blocks. Their entrapment is not necessarily limited to concrete walls and locked doors, but is imposed by inner conflicts and thoughts. Even though the women share similar dreams of breaking free from social constraints and conditions, each fights her own battle.
It’s worth mentioning that four films to be screened at the Karama Beirut festival have been selected from Anhar Package The films are: From Egypt “As You Can See“ by Ghada Fikri, from Palestine “Bars” by Waleed Zedaney, from Belgium “So We Live” by Rand Abou Fakher and from Canada “Rebel” by Pier-Philippe Chevigny.
