Karama Human Rights Film Festival – 9th Edition (You Are Not Alone)
The ninth edition of the Karama HRFF Festival was organized by Ma3mal 612 Think Factory and supported by the European Union and in partnership with the Royal Cultural Center and the Greater Amman Municipality from 5 to 10 December 2018 in Amman, Jordan.
This year’s festival was under the theme “You Are not” alone to discuss women’s issues through cinema and media, emphasizing the role, effectiveness and challenges of women in the audiovisual industry in an attempt to understand the general situation of women around the world and in the Arab world in particular. While examining a complex set of factors that have been and continue to affect women’s rights and gender equality in the world.
Karama is six-day film festival, held in Amman, Jordan since 2010. After 9 sessions of Karama HRFF, 480 human rights films were screened over nine years of cinema and human rights advocacy in Jordan and in the surrounding areas.
The festival featured 70 documentaries, Fiction and animation of all lengths, in the presence of directors, producers and stars of the films. The films were followed by discussions and Q&A sessions in the presence of Jordanian, Arab and international film teams and participants present in Amman.
The festival hosted musical performances, specialized seminars, evaluation and monitoring sessions of stereotypes on Arabic screens, specialized workshops on the role of women in the audiovisual industry, and a community outreach program aimed at introducing human rights films in Jordanian governorates, schools and universities.
In addition, the festival had opening and closing ceremonies in honor of Arab women thinkers, writers and personalities, as well as the Karama Feather Award for best documentary, Fiction, animation and short film as well as the ANHAR Award for Best Arab Film.
